The Story
There is something irresistible about this cat. It sits facing directly forward, paws together, its striped tabby coat rendered in fine grey engraving against a vivid red ground, its expression somewhere between dignified and faintly unimpressed in the way that only cats manage. Decorative tassels hang on either side of its head, framing it like a portrait, and the vertical format gives the whole thing the feeling of a formal sitting. Across the top a banner reads "Yoe Cheong & Co." and along the base the label notes "Made by N.K.M.S.K. Kobe, Japan," with Chinese characters reading 裕昌公司, Yoe Cheong and Co., the company name in both scripts.
Yoe Cheong & Co. was a trading firm in the Chinese-speaking commercial world, and this label was produced for it in Kobe, one of Japan's great treaty ports and a center of the export match industry. The cat was a meaningful choice: across many East and Southeast Asian cultures the cat is associated with good fortune, protection of the home and the warding off of bad luck and pests, all qualities that made it a natural and auspicious mascot for a household product. But beyond the symbolism, this is simply a wonderful piece of animal portraiture, the engraver clearly relishing the chance to capture the particular stillness and self-possession of a seated cat.
On the tee the label reads as a striking vertical portrait, the red ground glowing and the engraved cat holding every bit of its considerable personality.
Who Is It For
This tee is for cat people, first and foremost, and specifically the kind of cat person who appreciates a cat depicted with this much dignity and dry humor. Beyond that it suits anyone drawn to fine antique engraving, to the auspicious symbolism of the cat, to the layered history of a Chinese trading firm's matches made in a Japanese port city. They wear it because the cat is genuinely charming and because the story behind it is even better than it first appears.
Available Colors
Black: On black the label's red ground reads with deep intensity and the cream banners and grey engraved cat hold maximum contrast. The vertical portrait format sits beautifully against the dark shirt and the whole label glows, the cat's expression as clear and characterful as ever. A strong, classic pairing.
About the Collection
Every design in the Ichinichi Collection is sourced from a personal archive of original Japanese matchbox labels spanning 1880 to 1940. The Yoe Cheong & Co. cat label was made in Kobe for a Chinese trading firm, its name printed in both English and Chinese, and the seated cat drew on the animal's long association with good fortune and the protection of the home. It is one of the most charismatic animal portraits in the archive, and a favorite for anyone with a cat of their own.
