The Story

Yoe Cheong & Co. was a trading firm in the Chinese-speaking commercial world, and this label was produced for it in Kobe, one of Japan's great treaty ports and a center of the export match industry. The cat was a meaningful choice: across many East and Southeast Asian cultures the cat is associated with good fortune, protection of the home and the warding off of bad luck and pests, all qualities that made it a natural and auspicious mascot for a household product. The Yoe Cheong & Co. cat label was made in Kobe for a Chinese trading firm, its name printed in both English and Chinese, and the seated cat drew on the animal's long association with good fortune and the protection of the home. It is one of the most charismatic animal portraits in the archive, and a favorite for anyone with a cat of their own.
