The Story
This label gets straight to the point and is all the better for it. A rooster head fills the frame in close profile, comb and wattle picked out in vivid red, the curve of the neck and the layered feathers rendered in fine grey-blue engraving against a cream ground. A few horizontal red lines beneath the head suggest a horizon or a perch, just enough to ground the bird without distracting from it. Across the top, "Safety Matches" arcs through a red scrolled banner, and at the base "Made in Japan" sits in a dark panel. The whole thing has the directness of a good shop sign: one strong image, two clear lines of text, nothing wasted.
The rooster was among the most popular and meaningful motifs in the entire export matchbox trade. Across East and Southeast Asian cultures it carried associations of vigilance, courage, honesty and the dawn, the bird whose crowing drives away darkness and announces the new day. Those qualities made it a natural mascot for matches, the small household tool that brings light. Rendered here as a tightly cropped portrait rather than a full standing bird, the rooster reads as bold and characterful, the close framing giving it an almost modern, logo-like quality.
On the tee the label sits as a strong vertical portrait at chest height, the red comb and cream ground reading warmly and the engraved feathers holding their fine detail.
Who Is It For
This tee suits someone who likes a graphic with real character and a clear point of view. They are drawn to the rooster, to its long associations with vigilance and the dawn, to the bold cropped composition that feels at once antique and contemporary. They might keep chickens, be born in the year of the rooster, love fine engraving, or simply appreciate a strong animal portrait on a well-made shirt. The image is direct enough to read across a room and detailed enough to reward a closer look.
Available Colors
Green: The bright leaf green of this colorway is a lively, fresh ground for this label. The cream panel reads warmly against it, the red comb and banner pop with real energy, and the grey-blue engraving of the rooster holds clean contrast. A cheerful, confident pairing that suits the bird's own bold character.
About the Collection
Every design in the Ichinichi Collection is sourced from a personal archive of original Japanese matchbox labels spanning 1880 to 1940.
