The Story
The Lark label is a quietly sophisticated piece of export printing. At its center, a lark perches on a branch, its body turned in profile, every feather rendered in fine grey engraving with the precision of a natural history illustration. Small circular medallions sit on either side of the bird and a cluster of orange blossoms anchors the composition below, the whole scene set against a warm orange ground. Across the top the label reads "The Lark Tändstickor," the second word being Swedish for matches, and "Made in Japan" sits just beneath. Along the base, in clear lettering, the label names its exporter: "Sole Exporters Samuel Samuel & Co. Ltd., Kobe."
The detail in that base text tells a real story. Tändstickor points to a Scandinavian or Northern European market, a region where Swedish matches had long set the standard, and where a Japanese-made match would have competed directly on quality and price. Samuel Samuel & Co. was a major British trading house with deep roots in Japan, operating from the treaty port of Kobe and connected to the founding of what would later become the Shell transport and trading empire. A label like this sits at a genuine crossroads of global commerce: a lark drawn in the European natural history tradition, a Swedish product category, a British exporter, a Japanese factory, all meeting on a single matchbox in the early twentieth century.

Ltd. of Kobe, a major British trading house in Japan, and its Swedish product name points to a Northern European market. It is one of the archive's most internationally layered labels, a single small object carrying the marks of four different national commercial traditions, and the engraving of the lark is among the finest bird illustrations in the collection.
