The Story
A swan sits at the center of a perfect circle , engraved with the fine line precision of a Meiji-era Japanese craftsman who understood that even a matchbox deserved a proper composition. Stars punctuate the inner ring. A sunburst radiates behind the bird. And surrounding the whole central medallion, filling every corner of the label with intent: an intricate scrollwork border of vines, clouds, and daisy florals rendered in ivory against deep crimson.
Made in Japan. The text curves along the bottom of the inner circle, almost hidden in the engraving, like a maker's mark on a piece of silverware.
This label from the Ichinichi archive is one of the most ornamentally ambitious pieces in the collection. Where many labels use a single graphic device, this one layers , medallion within border within frame ,with the density and patience of a craftsman who had nothing to prove and everything to give to the surface. As a kiss-cut sticker, every element of that labor is present at full detail. The scrollwork fills right to the edge. The engraved swan rewards a close look. The crimson ground does not compromise.
Who This Is For
For the Japanese vintage collector who appreciates the quieter end of the archive , the ornamental over the bold, the refined over the loud. For the sticker person who gravitates toward detail that earns its place. For anyone drawn to the decorative tradition of Meiji-era Japanese commercial printing, which understood that beauty had no minimum size requirement.
Exceptional on journals, notebooks, planners, sketchbooks, and anywhere else that benefits from a considered object placed with intention. Also works on laptops and water bottles for the person whose aesthetic runs toward the vintage and the intricate.
About the Collection
Every design in the Ichinichi Collection is sourced from a personal archive of original Japanese matchbox labels spanning 1880 to 1940. The ornamental border labels represent some of the most labor-intensive work in the archive , designs that required the finest engraving skill of any label category, and that have aged into something closer to textile pattern than commercial packaging.
