The Story
This label is a masterclass in export matchbox design at its most considered. At the center, a rooster stands in full profile within a teal circular medallion, its plumage rendered in extraordinary detail: deep auburn breast feathers, a cascade of olive and green tail feathers, bright red comb, a single alert eye. At its feet a pink peony blooms from a slender stem, and behind it a low horizon of green grasses and warm earth gives the scene just enough ground to stand on. The whole medallion floats on a vivid yellow field bordered in green and pink, the kind of color combination that should not work as well as it does.
Flanking the central image, four Chinese characters in pink-bordered circles run down each side. On the right, 金雞牌記, Golden Rooster Brand Mark. On the left, 貨真價實, a phrase meaning genuine goods at honest prices, a commercial declaration that tells you exactly what kind of market this label was made for. These were not decorative characters chosen for their appearance. They were a direct address to the buyer, a promise of quality printed into the design itself.
The label was produced for the Chinese-speaking export markets of Southeast Asia, where Japanese matchbox manufacturers competed fiercely and brand recognition mattered enormously. A rooster was an auspicious and legible symbol, the golden rooster in particular carrying associations of prosperity and good fortune that would have resonated immediately with buyers across the region.
As a kiss-cut sticker the label is reproduced at full fidelity, the colors as saturated and the linework as precise as the original printing allows. It peels cleanly from its backing and goes wherever you want it.
Who Is It For
This sticker is for the person who has strong opinions about what goes on their laptop, their water bottle, their sketchbook. They collect things with history and personality and they're not interested in generic illustration or trend-driven graphics. They might be drawn to Chinese or Japanese visual culture, to vintage print, to the zodiac, to beautiful birds, or simply to the fact that this rooster is extraordinarily well drawn. It is the kind of sticker that people ask about, and the answer is always more interesting than expected.
About the Collection
Every design in the Ichinichi Collection is sourced from a personal archive of original Japanese matchbox labels spanning 1880 to 1940. The Golden Rooster Brand label dates from the Meiji era and was produced for Chinese-speaking export markets across Southeast Asia, where brand recognition and symbolic resonance were central to commercial success. The Chinese text flanking the central medallion, a brand declaration on the right and a quality guarantee on the left, makes this one of the archive's most directly communicative labels. The rooster itself is among the finest animal illustrations in the collection.
