The Story

The Power Brand label was built to be noticed. "Safety Matches" arcs across the top in bold block lettering over a navy banner, with "Power Brand" beneath it and a sun motif anchoring the center of a sharp red geometric form. A small animal, a leaping dog or deer, clears the circle in a single bound. At the base, a scroll reads "Impregnated Superior Quality," the era's straightforward way of saying the matches were chemically treated for reliability in humid climates. "Trademark" runs vertically on both margins, a registered mark in a fiercely competitive export market.

The label was produced during the Taisho era, when Japanese match manufacturers were supplying markets across South and Southeast Asia and competing hard on both quality and visual identity. The Power Brand's palette of cream, navy and red is crisp and intentional, closer to a sporting poster or a shipping mark than conventional decorative label art. It was designed to be read quickly and remembered, which is exactly what it does more than a century later.

As a kiss-cut sticker the label comes into its own as a versatile graphic object. On a laptop, a journal, a gift box or a tin it sits with the same quiet authority it once had on a matchbox moving through a trading port somewhere in Asia.

Who Is It For

This sticker suits someone who thinks carefully about what they put their name next to. They're drawn to objects with real provenance, to the graphic language of early twentieth century commercial printing, to the kind of design that was made to work rather than to impress. They'll use it on a notebook, a water bottle, a package they're sending to someone who will appreciate it. They might not know the history of the Japanese match export trade yet, but once they look at this label properly they'll want to.

About the Collection

Every design in the Ichinichi Collection is sourced from a personal archive of original Japanese matchbox labels spanning 1880 to 1940. The Power Brand Safety Matches label dates from the Taisho era, a period when Japanese manufacturers dominated export match markets across Asia and invested seriously in label design as a commercial tool. The bold geometry, registered trademark and quality declaration printed directly onto the label face make it one of the archive's most confident examples of the form.
