The Story

A multi-armed deity seated in lotus position, third eye open, sunburst radiating in alternating orange, red, and teal behind a golden crown , Safety Match. Made in Japan. Below, a teal banner in bold yellow lettering that frames the whole composition like a devotional card.

This is one of the most visually complete labels in the entire Ichinichi archive. Where some labels are bold and simple, this one is layered: the lotus seat in deep pink, the mala beads in red, the staff and sacred objects held in four outstretched arms, the third eye set precisely between calm brows. It is a Japanese printer's interpretation of South Asian sacred iconography , produced for the India export market during the Meiji or Taisho era, when Japanese match manufacturers dominated supply across the subcontinent , and it is rendered with a care and detail that goes well beyond commercial obligation.

As a kiss-cut sticker it reproduces with the full intensity of the original label's color palette. The yellow ground, the teal banner, the red sunburst: this is one of the most vivid stickers in the collection, and one of the most conversation-worthy anywhere it gets placed.

Who This Is For

For the South Asian heritage collector, the Hindu iconography enthusiast, the Japanese vintage lover, and the sticker person who is done with generic and wants something with genuine cross-cultural depth. This label existed in the real world , on a real matchbox, sold in a real market across the Indian subcontinent , long before it became a sticker. That history travels with it.

Perfect for laptops, journals, water bottles, notebooks, sketchbooks, phone cases, planners, and anywhere else you want a hundred years of Japanese-Indian commercial art history to live.

About the Collection

Every design in the Ichinichi Collection is sourced from a personal archive of original Japanese matchbox labels spanning 1880 to 1940. The India export labels are among the most visually ambitious and culturally layered pieces in the archive , produced at a remarkable intersection of Japanese craft and South Asian sacred iconographic tradition, for a market that stretched from Bombay to Rangoon.
