The Story

Two camels face each other on a deep crimson ground — mirrored, proud, rendered in precise engraved line work that gives each animal a weight and presence you wouldn't expect from something this small. Japan. Noda. Seizo. Three words in a banner across the bottom, and everything else left to the image.

This label from the Ichinichi archive is a masterclass in pre-war Japanese graphic restraint. No border ornament, no medallion seals, no multilingual text — just two beautifully drawn camels and a maker's mark. Noda Seizo was a Japanese match manufacturer producing for Middle Eastern and Central Asian export markets, where the camel was both a culturally resonant symbol and a mark of quality that crossed language barriers instantly. The label was designed to communicate without words. A hundred years later, it still does.

As a kiss-cut sticker, the label reproduces with the same aged-paper warmth and engraving detail of the original — perfect for laptops, water bottles, notebooks, journals, phone cases, sketchbooks, and anywhere else you want a piece of pre-war Japanese graphic history.

Who This Is For

For the Japanese vintage collector, the matchbox label enthusiast, the graphic design lover, and anyone who appreciates the quiet power of a perfectly composed pre-war commercial illustration. Also a natural gift for camel lovers, Middle East and Silk Road history enthusiasts, and collectors of Japonisme ephemera.

Small enough to go anywhere. Detailed enough to reward a close look every time.

About the Collection

Every design in the Ichinichi Collection is sourced from a personal archive of original Japanese matchbox labels spanning 1880 to 1940. The Middle East and Central Asia export labels are among the most graphically stripped-back pieces in the archive — designed for markets where visual communication had to transcend language, and where the image alone had to do all the work.
