The Story

A figure in a floral kimono stands atop a giant toad, hand raised, holding a leaf ,the classic pose of Jiraiya, the legendary ninja toad sorcerer of Japanese folklore. Above them, a banner: Best Matches. Below, Japanese characters reading 合洋计 frame the scene in the geometric Greek-key border that Japanese export label designers used to signal quality to international markets.

This label from the Ichinichi archive is one of the most narratively rich pieces in the entire collection ,a pre-war Japanese matchbox label that draws directly from the popular Jiraiya legend, a story of magic, toads, and transformation that had captured the Japanese popular imagination since the Edo period. That it ended up on a matchbox label for export is exactly the kind of delightful collision between high folklore and commercial art that defines the best pieces in the archive.

On a black PU passport cover, the crimson and aged-paper tones of the label sit like a travel talisman. A figure who travels by giant toad is exactly the right energy for a passport cover.

Who This Is For

For the Japan traveler, the Japonisme collector, the folklore enthusiast, and anyone who appreciates the kind of travel accessory that earns a second look at the boarding gate. This is also a genuinely exceptional gift for anyone heading to Japan  or anyone who wishes they were. The RFID blocking cover means it's as practical as it is beautiful.

A passport cover that carries a hundred years of Japanese popular culture in its front panel. Pack accordingly.

About the Collection

Every design in the Ichinichi Collection is sourced from a personal archive of original Japanese matchbox labels spanning 1880 to 1940. The folklore and mythology labels represent some of the most narratively ambitious pieces in the archive  commercial objects that reached into Japan's deepest cultural stories and compressed them onto the surface of a matchbox for a global audience.
