The Story
Two brightly feathered lovebirds perch facing each other on a furled banner, sharing the handle of an open umbrella that arches overhead like a canopy. Their plumage is picked out in red, blue, gold and green against a saturated yellow ground inside a red border, and the composition is perfectly symmetrical, the pair mirrored around the umbrella's central pole. THE INSEPARABLES runs across the blue canopy, SAMUEL'S KOBE sits between the birds, and MADE IN JAPAN curves along the banner below. Set on the black label panel of a frosted glass candle, the bright little scene reads like a miniature framed print, and the wooden wick gives it a gentle crackle as it burns.
The name is a small joke made literal: lovebirds have long been nicknamed "the inseparables," so two of them sheltering together under one umbrella turns the bird into the brand. The maker line names Samuel's of Kobe, the trading house behind a number of these export labels, working out of the city that was the engine of Japan's match trade through the Meiji and Taisho years. Sentimental, charming labels like this one were aimed at buyers across Asia and beyond, and surviving examples now live mostly in collections.
On the candle, the symmetrical pair and the warm yellow ground give the jar a graphic, collectable presence, equal parts light source and display object. Lit or unlit, it carries the look of a vintage trade emblem onto the shelf, with the soft flicker and crackle of a wooden wick adding to the effect.
Who Is It For
Collectors of Japanese matchbox graphics and printed ephemera, pop art lovers, people drawn to bird and lovebird imagery and to romantic, sentimental design, and anyone who wants a piece of genuine 1880 to 1940 commercial art as part of their everyday surroundings. It suits interiors that lean toward vintage and archival graphics over modern branding, and makes an easy gift, not least for a couple.
About the Collection
Every design in the Ichinichi Collection is sourced from a personal archive of original Japanese matchbox labels spanning 1880 to 1940. This lovebirds label belongs to the export side of that archive, made by Samuel's of Kobe, and is reproduced here directly from the original with its red, yellow and jewel-toned inks and age intact.
