The Story

A multi-armed deity seated in lotus position, radiating light from a sunburst crown, rendered in the vivid primary palette of pre-war Japanese commercial printing. Safety Match. Made in Japan.

This label from the Ichinichi archive is one of the most culturally layered pieces in the collection a Japanese-printed representation of a Hindu deity, almost certainly produced for export to India or the Indian subcontinent market during the Meiji or Taisho era. Japan was a major supplier of safety matches to Asian markets throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and labels were routinely designed to appeal to local religious and cultural iconography. The result is a graphic that belongs fully to neither tradition ,it is Japanese printmaking's interpretation of South Asian sacred imagery, rendered in flat color blocks and fine engraved line work, filtered through the commercial sensibility of an era when the whole of Asia was one interconnected marketplace.

The yellow ground, the radiating rays, the deep red and blue of the robes against a fitted crop tee, this prints with the intensity of a devotional poster and the graphic punch of a vintage concert tee at the same time.

Who This Is For

For the woman drawn to South Asian aesthetics, Hindu iconography, and vintage world-trade graphic art. For the Japanese retro enthusiast who appreciates the deeper cross-cultural layers of the matchbox label tradition. For anyone who wears their spiritual or aesthetic world on their sleeve literally ,and wants something with genuine historical depth behind the image.

This is a rare one. The India export labels represent one of the most visually distinctive and culturally complex corners of the entire Ichinichi archive.

Available Colors

  • Black : the sunburst yellow and deep reds ignite against the dark background
  • Natural : aged cream softens the label into something that reads like a found sacred print
  • Pink : warm and devotional, echoes the label's red tones beautifully
  • White : clean and bold, the full primary palette of the label hits without competition

About the Collection

Every design in the Ichinichi Collection is sourced from a personal archive of original Japanese matchbox labels spanning 1880 to 1940.
