The Story
Small label. Big attitude.
Handelmij Hendrik. Makassar. 恒益公司. The rooster. The revolver. All of it sitting chest-pocket-small on a fitted crop tee and somehow that restraint makes it hit harder. Where the full-chest version commands a room, this placement whispers. And people lean in.
This is one of the rarest labels in the Ichinichi archive , commissioned by a Dutch trading house in Makassar, Sulawesi, printed in Japan with Chinese merchant characters beneath the city name, for distribution across the Indonesian archipelago in the years before the world changed. The rooster-and-revolver combination was a deliberate brand identity: strength, confidence, and just enough edge to be unforgettable on a market shelf.
On a fitted organic cotton crop tee, placed center-chest in portrait format, it becomes something the original label makers never imagined , a quietly iconic graphic for someone who knows what they're looking at. And for everyone else, it's the thing that makes them ask.
Who This Is For
For the Japanese retro enthusiast, the Dutch East Indies history collector, and the woman who gravitates toward the unexpected. This is the crop tee for the person who already owns the sling bag and the mug , and wants the look to complete. Or for someone discovering the Ichinichi archive for the first time through exactly this kind of perfectly odd, historically loaded graphic.
The crimson-on-crimson placement on the pink colorway is a full tonal fashion moment. The black makes it a statement. Natural gives it archive energy. White is clean editorial.
About the Collection
Every design in the Ichinichi Collection is sourced from a personal archive of original Japanese matchbox labels spanning 1880 to 1940. The Dutch East Indies export labels are among the rarest and most historically complex pieces in the archive — produced at the intersection of Dutch colonialism, Japanese printing mastery, and Chinese merchant networks across maritime Southeast Asia. This label is one of the survivors.
