DESCRIPTION
The Story
A court lady walks beside a spotted deer, lantern in hand, moving through a golden ground framed by Chinese column characters in deep red and teal pillar borders. Best Safety Match. T. Honda. Made in Japan.
This is one of the most compositionally refined labels in the entire Ichinichi archive a Meiji-era design by T. Honda that draws on the classical Japanese and Chinese iconographic tradition of the court figure and the sacred deer, compressed into a horizontal matchbox label with the density and color of a miniature woodblock print. The deer and court lady pairing evokes the ancient aesthetic world of Nara Japan's earliest imperial capital, where tame deer roamed freely among the temples and were considered sacred messengers of the gods. On a matchbox label produced for export, that imagery becomes a quiet cultural statement about beauty, refinement, and the Japan that existed before the world changed.
Five colorways. Each one shifts the label's character. On black the golden ground glows like a lantern in the dark. On red the warm tones of the label feel at home. On maroon it deepens into something almost ceremonial. On purple the contrast is unexpected and vivid. On forest green the red and gold of the label land with poster energy.
Who This Is For
For the Japanese vintage collector, the Japonisme enthusiast, the person drawn to classical Japanese and Chinese court aesthetics — and the graphic tee collector who wants something with the color intensity and compositional sophistication of a woodblock print on a premium cotton shirt. This is also one of the most versatile colorway ranges in the Ichinichi Collection: five choices, five completely different moods, all anchored by the same extraordinary label.
Available Colors
- Black: the golden ground radiates, maximum lantern-light drama
- Red: warm and richly tonal, the label's reds and golds merge with the shirt
- Maroon: deep and ceremonial, the label takes on the gravity of a museum object
- Purple: bold and unexpected, the yellow ground pops with full graphic intensity
- Forest Green: the red and gold of the label lands like a vintage travel poster
About the Collection
Every design in the Ichinichi Collection is sourced from a personal archive of original Japanese matchbox labels spanning 1880 to 1940. The T. Honda labels represent some of the most artistically ambitious work in the archive,a maker who understood that a matchbox label was still worth treating as a serious compositional problem.
