The Story
A dragon uncoils across crashing waves ,teal scales, hot pink ground, body spiraling toward a distant castle on the horizon. Made in Japan. Nippon Match Manufacturing Co., Ltd.
This label from the Ichinichi archive is one of the most visually electric pieces in the entire collection. The Nippon Match Manufacturing Co. was one of the major consolidated match producers of Meiji and Taisho-era Japan, and their dragon label is a masterclass in pre-war Japanese graphic energy: mythological power compressed into a rectangle, printed in colors that have no right to look this vivid after a hundred years.
The teal dragon against hot pink is not an accident. Japanese commercial printers understood contrast, tension, and the kind of graphic combination that stops a buyer at a market stall. It still works on entirely different shelves, for entirely different reasons. The castle in the upper right corner is a quiet detail that rewards looking twice. So is the pearl the dragon is chasing, barely visible beneath its coiling body.
Who This Is For
For the Japanese dragon art enthusiast, the vintage graphic tee collector, the streetwear-adjacent dresser who wants their chest graphic to carry genuine historical weight. This label was made by one of Japan's most significant pre-war match manufacturers for a global export market and it has the confidence of something that was always designed to be seen at scale.
Three colorways: black for maximum drama, red for tonal heat, military green for the unexpected contrast that makes the pink and teal sing.
Available Colors
- Black : teal dragon on hot pink against black: the definitive version, maximum graphic energy
- Red : label pink meets shirt red in a layered tonal heat that feels deliberately considered
- Military Green : the cool contrast that makes the pink and teal of the label feel almost neon
About the Collection
Every design in the Ichinichi Collection is sourced from a personal archive of original Japanese matchbox labels spanning 1880 to 1940 — the golden age of Japanese commercial label printing. The Nippon Match dragon represents the corporate era of that tradition: a major manufacturer investing heavily in label design as brand identity, at a moment when Japanese printing led the world.
