The Story
A lighthouse beam sweeps across a moonlit harbor. A tall-masted sailing ship passes in the distance. Mountains rise behind in the blue night. And at the bottom, in confident ribbon lettering: Manufactured by Takashima. Made in Japan. Trade Mark.
This is one of the most romantically composed labels in the entire Ichinichi archive, a miniature maritime scene that belongs in a frame as much as it belonged on a matchbox. Takashima was a Meiji-era Japanese manufacturer producing for the export trade, and this lighthouse label speaks to that era's fascination with Western maritime iconography filtered through Japanese printmaking sensibility. The result is something that feels simultaneously like a vintage travel poster, a woodblock print, and a piece of pre-war commercial art, because in many ways it is all three at once.
The full-color label wraps the mug with the warm glow of that lighthouse beam, the crescent moon hanging in the upper right exactly where it should be. A morning coffee never had better company.
Who This Is For
For the lighthouse lover, the maritime art collector, the Japanese vintage enthusiast, and anyone who appreciates the quiet drama of a well-composed pre-war label. This mug makes an exceptional gift for the sailor, the traveler, the historian, the Japan lover, or simply the person whose morning ritual deserves something more considered than a plain ceramic cup.
The detail rewards close looking. The crescent moon. The rigging of the sailing ship. The beam of light rendered in careful engraved lines. This is what craftsmanship looked like when it had nowhere to hide.
About the Collection
Every design in the Ichinichi Collection is sourced from a personal archive of original Japanese matchbox labels spanning 1880 to 1940. The Takashima lighthouse label is among the most scenic and narratively rich pieces in the archive — a tiny world rendered with the patience and precision of a maker who understood that beauty has no minimum size.
