The Story
This elephant has real gravity to it. Engraved in fine dark blue line work, the animal stands in full profile, trunk curled, tusks forward, every fold of its hide rendered with the patient detail of a natural history plate. Behind it a sun rises over a low horizon, its rays fanning upward into a clear sky, and the whole scene sits within a ruled border on a cream ground. "Safety Match" runs across the top, "Trade Mark" sits to either side of the animal, "Made in Japan" appears below, and along the base a banner names the maker: Nippon Match Mfg. Co. Ltd. The label wraps the mug on a deep navy field that makes the cream panel glow.
Nippon Match Manufacturing was one of the significant names in Japan's match export industry, producing for markets across Asia where the elephant carried enormous symbolic weight. Associated with strength, wisdom, memory and good fortune, and bound up with Buddhist and Hindu tradition across South and Southeast Asia, the elephant was among the most powerful and widely understood trademarks a manufacturer could choose. The rising sun behind it adds another layer, a motif of dawn and renewal that also nods to Japan itself, the country of origin printed proudly into the design. It is a label that works on every level: as fine engraving, as commercial trademark, and as a small piece of cross-cultural symbolism.
On the two-tone mug the label wraps the body on its deep navy ground, the cream panel and dark engraving reading crisply and the colored handle and interior picking up the richness of the design.
Who Is It For
This mug is for someone who likes a strong, characterful image with their morning coffee and appreciates the history behind it. They are drawn to the elephant, to its associations with strength and good fortune, to the fine engraving and the rising-sun motif. They might collect ephemera, love elephants, or simply want a mug that looks like nothing else on the shelf. It works on a desk, in a kitchen, or wrapped as a gift for the person who notices the details.
Available Colors
Black: The black handle and interior give the navy label a sharp, classic framing, the dark accents deepening the ground and letting the cream panel and engraved elephant read with clean contrast. The most graphic of the two.
Maroon: The deep maroon handle and interior bring out the warmth in the label, the rich berry tone sitting beautifully against the navy ground and giving the whole mug a slightly vintage, considered feel. A warmer, softer reading.
About the Collection
Every design in the Ichinichi Collection is sourced from a personal archive of original Japanese matchbox labels spanning 1880 to 1940. The Nippon Match elephant label pairs one of the most powerful trademark animals in the export trade with a rising-sun motif and the maker's name, Nippon Match Mfg. Co. Ltd. The fine engraving and the elephant's deep symbolic resonance across Asian markets make it one of the most dignified animal labels in the archive.
