The Story
This is one of the most gloriously over-the-top labels in the whole archive, and on a bucket hat it becomes a small riot of detail. At the center, a military officer in a plumed helmet is shown in profile within a circular medallion, ringed by the words "Superior Safety Match." From behind the medallion spread a pair of great membranous wings in vivid pink, like a bat's or a dragon's, and the maximalism only builds from there: a sinuous dragon arches across the top, a snarling beast head bares its teeth at the base, and tendrils, claws and scrollwork fill every remaining inch. "Made in" climbs the left side and "Japan" the right, framing the whole fever dream of a composition.
Labels like this one show Japanese export designers at their most ambitious and least restrained, throwing European military portraiture, East Asian dragons and pure graphic invention into a single dense, symmetrical emblem. The effect is heraldic and slightly fantastical, a coat of arms for a country that never existed. The combination of the cool engraved figure at the center and the hot pink wings around it makes this one of the most striking and unusual labels in the archive, the kind of design that rewards long looking.
On the bucket hat the label sits crisp and bold on the front, the pink wings, red medallion and fine engraving holding their detail against the cotton.
Who Is It For
This hat is for someone who wants a maximalist, fantastical image with real history behind it. They are drawn to the winged officer, to the dragon and the snarling beast, to the hot pink wings and the sheer density of invention, and to the layered story of Japanese export design at its most ambitious. It reads boldly from a distance and rewards anyone who comes close enough to take in every claw and tendril. A statement piece for someone who likes their headwear with personality.
Available Colors
Black: On black the hot pink wings and red medallion glow with real intensity, the fine engraving of the officer, dragon and beast holding clean contrast against the dark cotton. Bold and unforgettable.
Bone: The soft off-white bone is a warm, vintage ground that echoes the aged paper of the original label, the pink wings and red medallion reading naturally against it. Understated and authentic.
Orchid: The soft purple orchid leans right into the label's pink wings, an unexpected tonal pairing that pushes the whole design toward the playful, pop-art end of the spectrum. Fresh and bold.
