The Story
An armored warrior stands facing forward, a sword held upright in one hand and a large fluted shield at his side, dressed in scale armor, tall boots and a plumed helmet with a sweeping moustache below. The whole figure is drawn in fine engraved line and printed in a single warm red ink over a cream ground, the face, armor and shield left pale in negative against the deep red field. SAWAR sits in a scrolled cartouche across the top, MADE IN and JAPAN flank the warrior at the waistline, and SAFETY MATCH curves along the foot of the panel. Printed large on a black muscle tank, the red rectangle reads like a framed playing-card or tarot figure on the chest.
This is a classic Meiji and Taisho export label, made in Japan for markets across Asia where a martial hero figure carried instant appeal. Japanese printers built a whole vocabulary of warriors, princes and deities aimed at South and Southeast Asian buyers, rendered with the crisp line engraving and single bold ink that defined the trade. The standing-warrior format is among the most collectable of these export designs, and surviving labels of this kind now live almost entirely in private archives.
On the tank, the symmetrical standing figure and saturated red ground give the graphic a heraldic, poster-like presence that holds from across a room. The wide armholes and relaxed cut keep things easy and off-duty, so the warrior carries the look whether the tank is worn to train, layered open over a long sleeve, or thrown on with shorts in summer.
Who Is It For
Collectors of Japanese matchbox graphics and printed ephemera, people drawn to warrior and heraldic imagery, and anyone after a piece of genuine 1880 to 1940 commercial art on something wearable. It suits gym and streetwear wardrobes that lean toward vintage and archival graphics rather than modern logos.
About the Collection
Every design in the Ichinichi Collection is sourced from a personal archive of original Japanese matchbox labels spanning 1880 to 1940. This warrior label belongs to the export side of that archive, made in Japan for markets across Asia, and is reproduced here directly from the original with its red ink, line work and age intact.
