Rio Sui Swallow Vintage Japanese Matchbox Label Tee

The Story

A single swallow dives across an oval of orange sunburst rays, wings swept back and tail forked, drawn in fine dark engraved line against the radiating ground. The oval sits inside a red rectangle with gold scrollwork in the corners and a beaded border, RIO SUI & CO curving over the top and BEST SAFETY MATCH along the base, with a line of Japanese characters tucked under the bird. The palette is classic three-color match printing, red, orange and gold doing all the work, and on a black tee the warm oval glows like a lit window against the dark cotton.

The swallow was one of the most popular emblems of the Japanese match export trade, a bird that reads as fast, lucky and far-traveling, which suited goods shipped clear across Asia in the Meiji and Taisho years. Rio Sui & Co is the trade name carried on this label, and the sunburst-and-bird format was a workhorse of the period, printed in countless variations for buyers at home and overseas. Surviving labels like this one now live mostly in collections.

Every design in the Ichinichi Collection is sourced from a personal archive of original Japanese matchbox labels spanning 1880 to 1940. This swallow label belongs to the export side of that archive, carried under the Rio Sui & Co trade name, and is reproduced here directly from the original with its red, orange and gold inks and age intact.

This unisex jersey short sleeve tee is made from 100% Airlume combed and ring-spun cotton at a lightweight 4.2 oz/yd² (142 g/m²), with a retail fit, crew neckline, ribbed knit collar, tapered shoulders, dual side seams and a tear-away label. Bella+Canvas is part of the Fair Labor Association and is Platinum WRAP certified, manufacturing in humane, sustainable conditions. Sleeve prints and neck labels, where applicable, are produced using DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing technology on products fulfilled by OPT OnDemand and Shirt Monkey.
