The Story
The Power Brand label was designed to be read fast and remembered long. "Safety Matches" arcs across the top in bold block lettering over a navy banner, with "Power Brand" set beneath it and a red sun anchoring the center of a sharp geometric form. A small animal, a leaping dog or deer, clears the circle in a single bound over the rising red shape below. At the base, a scroll banner declares "Impregnated Superior Quality," the period's direct way of communicating that the matches had been chemically treated for reliable ignition in the humid climates of South and Southeast Asia. "Trademark" runs vertically on both side margins, a registered mark in one of the most competitive export industries of the early twentieth century.
The label's palette of cream, navy and red is clean and purposeful, closer to a shipping mark or a sporting poster than conventional decorative label art. It was built for recognition, not ornament, and that directness is exactly what gives it such staying power. At hoodie scale the geometry of the label lands with particular force, the diagonal of the red form cutting across the chest with real graphic confidence.
Who Is It For
This hoodie suits someone who gravitates toward vintage workwear and early twentieth century graphic design without needing it explained. They appreciate the era when commercial printing was doing genuinely interesting things with flat color and bold geometry, and they're drawn to objects with a real history behind them rather than a manufactured one. The black colorway is for the person who lets the graphic carry the weight. Red is for the one who leans into the label's own color and commits to it. Royal blue sets the cream and red off with crisp, high contrast. Forest green is the considered choice, the one that reads most quietly and stays interesting the longest.
Available Colors
Black: On black the label sits like a patch from another era, a lit rectangle of cream, navy and red against a clean dark ground. The geometry reads with maximum clarity and the overall effect is graphic and assured.
Red: The label's own red and the red of the hoodie create a tonal layering that gives the cream ground extra brightness and makes the navy pop. It is a bold combination that the label was, in its own way, built for.
Royal Blue: Royal blue sharpens every element of the label. The cream ground reads brightly, the navy border holds its own against the surrounding blue, and the red geometry lands with real force. High contrast and confident.
Forest Green: The deep green of this colorway is the most understated of the four and the one that wears the best over time. The cream, navy and red sit warmly against it and the label takes on an almost archival quality, like something found rather than bought.
About the Collection
Every design in the Ichinichi Collection is sourced from a personal archive of original Japanese matchbox labels spanning 1880 to 1940. The Power Brand Safety Matches label dates from the Taisho era, a period when Japanese manufacturers dominated export match markets across Asia and invested seriously in label design as a commercial tool. The bold geometry, registered trademark and quality declaration printed directly onto the label face make it one of the archive's most confident and immediately readable designs.
