The Story

A teal dragon coils up out of stylized waves, body scaled and serpentine, claws spread and whiskered head turned back toward a red flaming pearl, with a small bridge and gateway sketched in along the top edge. The whole scene is printed in deep teal and hot pink, the two inks playing hard against each other over a finely ruled ground, with MADE IN JAPAN tucked at lower left and the maker banner running along the foot. It is a bold, high-contrast composition, and on a navy hoodie the pink panel glows vivid against the dark cotton.

The maker line names the Nippon Match Manufacturing Co., Ltd., one of the larger firms in Japan's match export industry during the Meiji and Taisho years. The dragon was among the most powerful and sought-after emblems of the trade, a creature of water, fortune and strength that carried instant appeal for buyers across East and Southeast Asia, and the chasing-the-pearl motif is one of its classic forms. Labels like this one, printed in saturated unexpected color pairings, are among the most striking of the period, and surviving examples now live mostly in collections.

On the hoodie, the coiling dragon and the electric pink ground give the graphic a poster-like punch that holds from across a room. Printed at a comfortable size on the chest, it reads as a vintage trade emblem rather than a modern logo, easy to wear and instantly legible.

Who Is It For

Collectors of Japanese matchbox graphics and printed ephemera, pop art lovers, people drawn to dragon and mythological imagery, and anyone who wants a piece of genuine 1880 to 1940 commercial art on something they can actually wear. The navy ground suits wardrobes that lean toward vintage and archival graphics rather than modern branding.

About the Collection

Every design in the Ichinichi Collection is sourced from a personal archive of original Japanese matchbox labels spanning 1880 to 1940. This dragon label belongs to the export side of that archive, made by the Nippon Match Manufacturing Co., Ltd., and is reproduced here directly from the original with its teal and pink inks and age intact.
