The Story

The dragon on this label was never meant to be subtle, and on a black enamel mug it is anything but. Printed by Nippon Match Manufacturing Co. Ltd. and marked "Made in Japan," the label places a serpentine dragon in teal at the center of a pink ground, its body coiling and twisting across waves, scales picked out with careful detail, claws extended, mouth open. In the upper right corner a pale fortified structure sits quietly behind the action, a castle or gatehouse rendered in a few economical lines. At the base, the manufacturer's name runs in its own banner: Nippon Match Manufacturing Co. Ltd., one of the major players in Japan's Taisho-era match export industry.

The dragon was one of the most powerful symbols available to Japanese export label designers. In Chinese and broader East Asian visual culture it carried authority, protection and auspicious power, making it an effective mark for goods moving through Southeast Asian trading ports. The pink and teal palette is striking and entirely original to the label, a color combination that feels thoroughly contemporary but predates any such intention by a century.

On the enamel mug the label wraps around the black body with the kind of presence that makes a morning coffee feel like a considered choice. The dark ground intensifies the pink and teal and the white rim and handle give the whole thing a clean, camp-ready finish.

Who Is It For

This mug suits someone who brings good objects into the field and doesn't see why camping gear and genuine design should be mutually exclusive. They might be a collector who drinks their coffee from things with history, or simply someone who appreciates a dragon rendered this well on something they'll use every day. At home it sits well on any desk or shelf. Outside it holds its own in any conditions, which is, after all, what it was always built for.

About the Collection

Every design in the Ichinichi Collection is sourced from a personal archive of original Japanese matchbox labels spanning 1880 to 1940. This dragon label was produced by Nippon Match Manufacturing Co. Ltd. during the Taisho era, when Japanese match manufacturers were among the most prolific producers of export label art in the world. The pink and teal palette of this label is one of the archive's most distinctive color combinations, entirely of its era and entirely impossible to replicate.
