The Story
This lighthouse label is one of the most atmospheric scenes in the archive, and on a muscle tank it reads like a small framed picture at the center of the chest. Within a tall oval frame, a red-and-white striped lighthouse rises from a stone breakwater, a steamship passing behind it on the water, with mountains and a glowing sun low on the horizon beyond. The scene is worked in full color, blues and greens for the sea and sky, warm yellow for the sun, red and white for the tower, all enclosed by a decorative pink border with scrollwork corners. "Made in" and "Japan" climb the two sides, and "Trade" and "Mark" sit lower on each flank.
The lighthouse was a natural and resonant emblem for the export match trade, a symbol of guidance, safety and the light that pierces the dark, exactly the qualities a match buyer might hope for. Harbor and maritime scenes also spoke to the seafaring routes that carried these little boxes across the world, from Japanese ports to markets throughout Asia and beyond. The combination of the carefully observed harbor view, the warm color and the reassuring symbolism of the guiding light makes this one of the most picturesque and appealing labels in the whole collection.
On the tank the label reads as a vivid, finely detailed panel at the center of the chest, the harbor scene and its colors holding their detail against the cotton.
Who Is It For
This tank is for someone who wants an atmospheric, picturesque image with real history behind it. They are drawn to the lighthouse, to the steamship and the harbor, to the warm color and the reassuring symbolism of the guiding light, and to the layered story of a Japanese-made label carried along the seafaring routes of the export trade. It reads as a handsome panel from across a room and rewards anyone who comes close enough to take in the detail. Cut for warm weather and easy layering.
About the Collection
Every design in the Ichinichi Collection is sourced from a personal archive of original Japanese matchbox labels spanning 1880 to 1940. This lighthouse label frames a full-color harbor scene, a striped lighthouse, a passing steamship and a glowing sun, within a decorative oval. The lighthouse, a symbol of guidance and safety, made a natural emblem for the match trade, and the picturesque scene makes it one of the most atmospheric labels in the archive.
