The Story
A multi-armed deity seated in lotus position, sunburst radiating in alternating rays of orange, red, teal and yellow behind a golden crown, blue lotus seat below. Safety Match. Made in Japan.
This India export label from the Ichinichi archive is one of the most vivid and vertically composed pieces in the collection. A portrait format design where the deity fills the entire golden ground with the focused intensity of a devotional card. Produced in Japan for the South Asian market during the Meiji or Taisho era, it represents one of the most fascinating chapters in pre-war Japanese commercial printing: labels designed to speak directly to the religious and cultural visual language of the Indian subcontinent, rendered by Japanese engravers working entirely from reference and imagination.
The result is something that belongs fully to neither tradition and entirely to both. A genuinely unique artifact of cross-cultural commercial art that has no modern equivalent.
On four very different shirt colorways the label lands differently every time. On red the warm tones merge and amplify. On green the yellow ground radiates with maximum contrast. On orange the label and shirt share a warm spectrum that feels almost ceremonial. On black the full primary intensity of the deity illustration blazes with the focused energy of something lit from within.
Who This Is For
For the South Asian heritage wearer who appreciates the cultural complexity of this label's origin. For the Japanese vintage enthusiast who knows the India export series is among the most historically significant in the archive. For the spiritual aesthetics collector who wants a graphic that carries genuine iconographic depth. And for anyone who simply responds to a perfectly composed, maximally colorful chest graphic that has a hundred years of real history behind it.
Available Colors
Black: maximum drama, every color of the deity illustration blazes against the dark ground. Red: warm tones merge and amplify, the deity radiates with full heat. Green: the yellow ground blazes with full contrast against the cool Irish green. Orange: label and shirt share a warm ceremonial spectrum, saffron energy all the way through.
