The Story

This is one of the most striking labels in the entire Ichinichi archive — and on a black tee at full chest size, it hits like a vintage concert poster. Handelmij Hendrik was a Dutch commercial operation based in Makassar, the great port city of Sulawesi in the Dutch East Indies. They commissioned this label from a Japanese printer — bold crimson ground, engraved rooster portrait, revolver laid across the lower half — for distribution across the Indonesian archipelago in the years before the world changed.

The Chinese characters reading 恒益公司 beneath the city name speak to the multi-ethnic merchant world of colonial Southeast Asia, where Dutch, Japanese, Chinese, and local commercial networks overlapped on every transaction. All of that history, compressed onto a matchbox label. Now on your chest.

About the Collection

Every design in the Ichinichi Collection is sourced from a personal archive of original Japanese matchbox labels spanning 1880 to 1940. The Dutch East Indies export series represents some of the rarest material in the collection — labels commissioned by European colonial trading houses, printed in Japan with extraordinary craft, distributed across the Indonesian archipelago, and almost entirely lost to time. This is one of the survivors.
