The Story

The Golden Rooster Brand label was built for recognition, and a century after it was printed it still commands a second look. A rooster stands in full profile within a teal circular medallion, its plumage layered in auburn, olive and green, comb bright red, eye alert. At its feet a pink peony blooms from a slender stem, low grasses dense behind it. The medallion floats on a vivid yellow ground framed in pink, and flanking it on both sides, four Chinese characters in pink-bordered circles declare the label's identity and its promise. On the right, 金雞牌記: Golden Rooster Brand Mark. On the left, 貨真價實: genuine goods at honest prices, a quality guarantee printed directly into the design for buyers who expected exactly that.

This label was produced for Chinese-speaking export markets across Southeast Asia during the Meiji era, when Japanese matchbox manufacturers were among the most prolific and inventive producers of commercial print art in the world. The rooster carried auspicious weight in the cultures this label was made for, the golden rooster in particular associated with prosperity and good fortune. The color is saturated and precise, the linework on the feathers genuinely fine, the composition balanced in a way that holds up at any scale.

On the garment-dyed Comfort Colors tee the label sits large and centered on the chest, the soft-washed surface giving the graphic a warmth and lived-in quality that suits a label of this age exactly.

Who Is It For

This tee suits someone who gravitates toward graphic wear with real depth behind it. They know what the Chinese characters say or they want to find out, and either way the answer adds something to the shirt rather than taking away from it. They're drawn to the label's auspicious energy, to its visual directness, to the fact that it was made more than a century ago by a Japanese manufacturer for a buyer in Southeast Asia and that all of that history is still sitting right there on the front of the tee. The garment-dyed fabric gives the whole thing a relaxed, broken-in feel that works as well on a weekend as anywhere else.

Available Colors

Black: On black the label's yellow ground becomes a vivid rectangle of color and the rooster reads with maximum force. The teal medallion and pink characters hold their detail cleanly against the dark ground. The most graphic of the five readings.

Red: The label's own pink tones and the warm red of the tee create a tonal richness that gives the yellow ground extra brightness. The rooster reads boldly and the Chinese characters carry real presence. A combination that feels genuinely festive without trying to be.

Violet: The soft washed purple of this colorway does something unexpected with the label: the yellow ground pops against it with unusual warmth and the teal medallion takes on a jewel-like quality. One of the more surprising combinations in this run and one of the best.

Green: The muted sage-adjacent green pulls out the teal in the medallion and creates a quietly harmonious reading of the label. The yellow still reads brightly and the overall effect is earthy and considered. A colorway that wears well over time.

Brown: Against the warm brown of this colorway the label takes on an almost antique quality, as if the colors have been gently deepened by time. The yellow ground and teal medallion hold their saturation and the rooster reads with the same confidence it carries on every other colorway, just with a little more warmth around it.

About the Collection

Every design in the Ichinichi Collection is sourced from a personal archive of original Japanese matchbox labels spanning 1880 to 1940. The Golden Rooster Brand label dates from the Meiji era and was produced for Chinese-speaking export markets across Southeast Asia, where brand recognition and symbolic resonance were central to commercial success. The Chinese text flanking the central medallion, a brand declaration on the right and a quality guarantee on the left, makes this one of the archive's most directly communicative labels. The rooster itself is among the finest animal illustrations in the collection.
