The Story

The Golden Rooster Brand label was built for recognition, and on a canvas tote it earns every bit of it. A rooster stands in full profile within a teal circular medallion, its plumage layered in auburn, olive and green, comb bright red, eye alert. At its feet a pink peony blooms from a slender stem, low grasses dense behind it. The medallion sits on a vivid yellow ground framed in pink and green, and flanking it on both sides, four Chinese characters in pink-bordered circles make the label's identity and its promise explicit. On the right, 金雞牌記: Golden Rooster Brand Mark. On the left, 貨真價實: genuine goods at honest prices, a commercial declaration printed directly into the design for buyers who needed to know exactly what they were getting.

This label was produced for Chinese-speaking export markets across Southeast Asia during the Meiji era, when Japanese matchbox manufacturers were among the most prolific and inventive producers of commercial print art in the world. The rooster carried auspicious weight in the cultures this label was made for, the golden rooster in particular associated with prosperity and good fortune. The color is saturated and precise, the linework on the feathers genuinely fine, the composition balanced in a way that holds up at any size.

On the canvas tote the label sits large and centered on the front face, the yellow ground reading differently but equally well against both the black and the natural canvas.

Who Is It For

This tote suits someone with a strong visual sensibility and a genuine interest in the history behind what they carry. They know what the Chinese text says or they want to find out. They appreciate that this rooster was drawn by a craftsperson in Meiji-era Japan for a buyer in Southeast Asia and that the whole chain of that exchange is still visible in the label. They bring it everywhere because it is the kind of bag people ask about, and the story behind it is always worth telling.

Available Colors

Black: On black the label's yellow ground becomes a lit frame of color and the rooster reads with maximum intensity. The pink characters and teal medallion hold their detail cleanly and the overall effect is graphic and assured, a strong combination that wears well in almost any context.

Natural: The cream of the natural canvas is a warm and easy ground for this label. The yellow reads as a natural extension of the canvas tone and the pinks, teals and greens sit with a softness that gives the whole thing an almost vintage-poster quality. Relaxed and genuinely good looking.

About the Collection

Every design in the Ichinichi Collection is sourced from a personal archive of original Japanese matchbox labels spanning 1880 to 1940. The Golden Rooster Brand label dates from the Meiji era and was produced for Chinese-speaking export markets across Southeast Asia, where brand recognition and symbolic resonance were central to commercial success. The Chinese text flanking the central medallion, a brand declaration on the right and a quality guarantee on the left, makes this one of the archive's most directly communicative labels. The rooster itself is among the finest animal illustrations in the collection.
